Meet the Parker Payless Liquor Staff
Hi I am Larry May the owner of Parker Payless Liquors. I was born and raised in Akron, Ohio, My family was in the grocery business where I worked with my father for many years. Wine was my passion within the grocery business and then I had an opportunity to open a small wine and deli shop with my wife. This was the beginning of my entrepreneurship. Then, I found an ad in a newspaper that I subscribed to from Colorado in Akron in 1987. I decided to take a chance and move my wife and three girls out to Colorado. I bought Parker Payless Liquors off of East Main and Parker Road in 1988. Back then Parker Payless was 3,000 square feet and I was a one-man show. Since then I have grown and moved three times within Parker now owning a 25,000 square foot store. You can always find a fantastic wine under $20 and that is what I strive for here at Parker Payless. I strive for the greatest selection, outstanding customer service, knowledgeable staff, and the best prices in town. Come say hello anytime or just look up and give me a wave!
My name is Andrew, and I’m the new “liquor guy” – Having spent the past 7 years working for Parker Payless, I’ve learned how to do everything possible to ensure this business operates as smooth as can be. I’ve recently started this new path of my career, and look forward to many years serving this community and the company! When I’m not at work, I’m frequently spotted attending sporting events, concerts, home-brewing, hanging with family and friends, heading “up the hill” to Blackhawk to blow off some steam (and blow some money too), or hiking and camping around this beautiful state.
Hello all I am Meaghan and I represent half of the amazing wine buyer team here at Parker Payless. I will have been with Parker Payless Liquors for 5 years in October! What a ride it has been. I began to discover wine while studying abroad in France during college. Luckily my focus of Art History during that time fed directly into the world of wine, which is full of artistic affinities and ancient secrets. The connection I feel towards winemakers comes from my childhood spent at our farm in Illinois. I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for farmers—and in that same vein, winemakers—who love nothing more than the soil of their land running between their fingers. During my down time, I love cooking and baking so I usually find myself throwing dinner parties or pulling together last minute wine nights. If you ever have questions, thoughts, and concerns come see me in the wine office; I love nothing more than to talk wine!
Hi, my name is Jim and I have been with Parker Payless for approximately 5 years as a wine consultant. I come with a background in the airline and freight shipping industries, most recently, working as a contracted logistical specialist and warehouse manager for the United States Air Force. During the course of my studies in culinary school, I had taken a beverage identification course when I first discovered my passion for wine. I was hooked! I knew deep down in my heart that my path should include wine. After working at several different wine stores (both large and small) I found my perfect fit at Parker Payless. When my contract with the Air Force ended, I approached the owner, Larry, and asked him for the chance to become a full time member of his wine team. My ultimate goal here at Parker Payless is to help put together the most diverse selection of wine and spirits available in our area, from widely recognized labels to more eclectic choices as well. Please feel free to come to the wine office and introduce yourself, and if you have any questions, don’t be afraid to ask. Cheers!
Hi, I’m Kevin and I am the Beer Manager here at Parker Payless Liqours. I have had the privilege of working here since June 2005. I started as a cashier, became a front-end manager and spent the last five years as the Beer Manager and Buyer. It really has been fun being in the retail business and meeting our customers, many who have become good friends. I am originally from Arkansas City, Kansas. I graduated from Washburn University in Topeka with a degree in economics. I had a thirty year career in the insurance industry, my last fifteen years as a Regional Vice President based here in Denver. I have two sons; one who lives in Oklahoma and one here in Denver. Some of my hobbies and free time are filled with golf, sports, reading, travel and most importantly my six grandchildren. We are extremely lucky to be in a state where microbrews have become an important part of our state and I hope you will come into Parker Payless and try many of the great beers!
Front End Manager
Hi My name is Ken. I am the Front End Manager for Parker Payless Liquors and I have been working here for 10 years. I moved to the great state of Colorado in 1974. I graduated from Bear Creek High School. I started working for King Soopers in 10th grade and then retired after 33 years of service. That is when I joined Parker Payless. My interests and hobbies include bowling, collecting silver coins, NFL football, going up to Blackhawk, and selling items on eBay.
Hello, My name is Walter because my boss thought I looked like the grumpy old dummy from Jeff Dunham’s ventriloquist act. You can Google it; personally I think I am much better looking. You may have seen me before in the store. I usually just stand in the corner of the Reserve Room but he let me out today to have my picture taken. Finally after just standing here looking stupid in this waiter costume for years, the boss finally gave me a real job. I’m old and grouchy but I know how to pick some excellent wine and spirits. So when everyone leaves for the night I will taste a lot of wine and let you know what I like. I also peek through Larry’s own personal collection when he’s not looking.
My name is Payless Pete. I am proud to be a permanent fixture here at Parker Payless since 1994. You see, I have been fortunate to have lived two lives; one as an oak tree on South Parker Road & Main Street and then as a statue right here in Parker Payless. When Safeway moved from the Goodwill location across the street, my boss Larry, purchased the lot where now Kneaders is. He built the building and donated the north portion of the property to the City of Parker for their East Main Street expansion. I had lived on that portion of the land but the city cut me down. Boy, people were not happy about that. Larry kept me and I rested on an empty lot for a while until Larry hired a talented chain saw artist to create my next life. As Parker historically was a horse ranch area, it was fitting that I became a cowboy and soon I was reborn as Payless Pete. I have since faithfully served at Parker Payless for almost twenty years and three locations. Stop by Parker Payless soon and say howdy.
