Winemaker Giorgio Rivetti has rock star status amongst his peers. At his eponymous winery La Spinetta he crafts world class wines from vineyards that are sustainably farmed with immense care. All his wines show spot on varietal character, balance and pedigree. I was recently honored to be invited to a lunch at Sierra Restaurant in Lone Tree, Colorado to meet with Giorgio and experience his most recent releases. The wines wowed us all and will most certainly wow you as well this holiday season.
2014 La Spinetta
Ca’ Di Pian
The grapes are sourced from 45-year-old vines creating a wine that is stylish and rich. Bright
ruby red with aromas of bright raspberry, blueberry, wet earth and a hint of orange peel. It is full bodied with bright acidity and lots of intensity but balanced and silky-textured, an ultra-fine Barbera to drink now through 2026. Best decanted for one hour. I enjoyed this with roast chicken at the lunch and it was fantastic!
2015 La Spinetta
Giorgio says it is better to make an outstanding Langhe Nebbiolo than an acceptable Barbaresco or Barolo. When you drink this bottle, you will see why. This is a classic nebbiolo with aromas of dried rose petals and dark fruits such as plums and blueberry. It is full bodied, chewy and rich with dusty tannins and a juicy yet elegant finish. This would be the perfect with stews or holiday dinners.
Decant for one hour.
2014 La Spinetta
Il Nero Di Casanova
Terre Di Pisa
Are you a fan of the bold wines of Tuscany? Then you must try Giorgio’s take on this famous region.
100% Sangiovese from the Casanova estate and the Sezzana vineyard, this beautiful red spends nine months in new French oak. Perfumed aromas of ripe berries, vanilla, mint and coffee leap from the glass. It is full bodied with berry and chocolate flavors and a hint of pepper with a ripe and focused finish. Beautiful with a grilled steak brushed with garlic butter. Decant for one hour.
2017 La Spinetta
A crisp sparkling with a delicately sweet bouquet followed by a remarkable fresh palate featuring
mango, peach and pear flavors. This is traditionally a dessert wine, but also perfect as an aperitif
or as an afternoon refreshment with Sunday brunch.
Cheers to the brilliant wines of La Spinetta!
